In recent times, Ghana has been bedeviled with the issue of illegal mining popularly known as ‘galamsey’. Communities such as Dunkwa, Offinso, Manso, and its environs have had a bitter taste of these activities by illegal miners.
Surface mining, alluvial mining, and improper covering of dugout pits are all life-threatening activities that can classified under ‘galamsey’.
The gruesome effects of this diabolic activity have negatively impacted the environment and its habitats.
Destroying vegetation that promotes a sustainable eco-friendly environment to support human lives coupled with dehumanizing contributes to some of the effects of ‘galamsey’. degrading arable lands, and polluting sources.
This is the reason why Our President and founder Mr. Agyei Peprah met Jaron Jim the director for Wateroam Singapore to discuss things we can do together to solve problems at the affected Galamsey Communities in Ghana, especially Water bodies. Below are the Objectives of the Meeting;
1. Environmental Rehabilitation: Restore degraded landscapes and promote ecosystem resilience by planting native tree species in areas impacted by illegal mining activities.
2. Sustainable Livelihoods: Empower local communities, particularly women, through participation in reforestation efforts, creating opportunities for income generation and skill development.
3. Community Engagement: Foster a sense of ownership and stewardship among community members by involving them in the planning, implementation, and monitoring of reforestation activities.
4. Good Drinking Water for the Affected Communities.
Nhyira Charities Foundation and Wateroam Collaboration will make an impact By engaging local communities in reforestation efforts, this initiative will not only contribute to the restoration of degraded landscapes but also promote sustainable development and resilience in areas affected by illegal mining.
Furthermore, it will empower women and marginalized groups, foster community cohesion, and advocate for sustainable land use practices, ultimately leading to the creation of a more environmentally sustainable and socially equitable future for Ghana.
As Wateroam Provides Portable and Affordable Water Solutions for Rural Areas or Communities in Asia and Nhyira Charities Foundation LBG hopes to collaborate with Wateroam to make a great impact in Ghana.
